Vanessa Da Mata / Ben Harper – “Boa Sorte/Good Luck”
Vanessa da Mata is a Latin Grammy Award winning singer and songwriter, phenomenon going platinum in Brazil and Portugal. Her music is representative of the so-named MPB (Brazilian popular music), mixing local stuff like Bossa Nova and Carimbó do Pará with outer influences such as soul, reggae and pop.
When I first heard this song I was in the dark, just falling asleep – that confusing state between consciousness and unconsciousness, probably stage 1 of the NREM. I wasn’t completely awake, still the lyrics were vibrating in my mind. I was surprised to kinda understand most of what she said..but then in the second part of the song the guy actually repeats all she’s saying in English. Being not fully conscious, I had a strange feeling like “I’ve heard those ideas somewhere before”, but I didn’t realize it’s just her English “echo”. Only acknowledged that when I heard the tune for the second time, several months later. What a wonderful song…just close your eyes, imagine yourself on a beach in Brazil, in the dark, thinking about a complicated relationship you had at some point, ending with the painful liberation of having the strength to say “good luck”, wondering about the years passed since then, about the then “we”, about the now “me” and about the “him” that’s been gradually dissolved by time…
I’d listen to this song over and over again. It’s not necessarily about her voice, the lyrics or the sound…it’s the unexplainable touch this song is giving. I feel it in so many ways. Maybe because of my fascination for Brazil. Including o português brasileiro- which might just be the most beautiful language in this world for me. Overall, it makes me feel flow, energy, peace. Words, the song, feelings, life…are all flowing wonderfully !
É só isso
Não tem mais jeito
Acabou
Boa sorte
Não tenho o que dizer
São só palavras
E o que eu sinto
Não mudará
Tudo o que quer me dar
É demais
É pesado
Não há paz
Tudo o que quer de mim
Irreais
Expectativas
Desleais
That’s it
There’s no way
It’s over
Good luck
I’ve nothing left to say
It’s only words
And what l feel
Won’t change
(Refrão)
Tudo o que quer me dar
Everything you want to give me
É demais
It’s too much
É pesado
It’s heavy
Não há paz
There’s no peace
Tudo o que quer de mim
All you want from me
Irreais
Isn´t real
Expectativas
Expectations
Desleais
Mesmo, se segure
Quero que se cure
Dessa pessoa
Que o aconselha
Há um desencontro
Veja por esse ponto
Há tantas pessoas especiais
Now even if you hold yourself
I want you to get cured
From this person
Who advises you
There is a disconnection
See through this point of view
There are so many special people in the world
So many special people in the world… in the world
All you want…all you want
(Repete refrão)
Now were falling (falling), falling (falling) into the night (into the night),
Falling (falling), falling (falling) into the night (um bom encontro é de dois),
Now were falling (falling), falling (falling) into the night (into the night),
Falling (falling), falling (falling) into the night.
